The Battle of Bramham Moor - Stained Glass Window
![]() |
As a person with an interest in things historical as well as enjoying new practical challenges in life, I was attracted by the Leaded Glass nightclass course being offered by the new York College starting last September.
See www.yorkcollege.ac.uk for more information regarding part time courses.
The course taught pupils the history and techniques of leaded/stained glass
and allowed you replicate those centuries old techniques with practical constructions. One project for a leaded glass window had to be based on
an historic event, and at this time I was aware of the upcoming celebration
of the Battle of Bramham Moor, and I quickly realised that the Battle
was a fitting subject for a window.
I was most generously assisted by
the BoBM committee members in my research for the design of the window, along with
Ann Sotheran my tutor, as well as finding lots of other information on the internet.
The design depicts the shields of Henry Percy - First Earl of Northumblerland,
and his opponent Sir Thomas Rokeby who fought under the banner of St Gerorge. Bramham and Yorkshire are signified by the two White Roses which along
with the two crossed medieval swords give overall balance.
The window has dimensions of 31inches by 22inches and has attracted a great deal of interest when displayed at the Medieval Gala on the 28th of June 2008.
I will be posting more information regarding the Battle and the leaded window
on this website, www.bramham.org.uk as and when it's final destination is decided upon.
