Bramham Parish News

Rev'd Linda Munt writes:

At the moment I’m looking forward to my holiday. It is lovely to be away isn’t it! All of us know how beneficial getting away from it all can be in refreshing us and giving us renewed strength.

One of my favorite spots that I found on my holiday last year was a little Turkish bar by the side of a swimming pool. It was one of the few places where I could just sit and be comfortable and pass the time away.

Above the bar was a poster, which became my thinking point for my holiday. It was advertising a tropical fruit cocktail called ‘Jammin’ and it showed a man leaning against a palm tree by the side of the water, sipping his drink, relaxed and comfortable. The whole scene was reflected in the water by the side of him. The words above the scene were “Jammin - take time to reflect".

That poster became an important part of my holiday; it caused me to take time to sit back and think about the situations, experiences and things that had happened, of the very busy year I’d had.

I discovered however, that reflection wasn’t always as easy as it appeared on the poster. Taking time to reflect brought up all sorts of feelings and thoughts that I had previously chosen to either ignore or bury down either because I didn't have time to think about them or because I hoped they’d go away or because I found them too painful to face up to.

As I forced myself to face my fear however, I realised that the answer was in the pain - that I had been running away from the answer by refusing to face the pain. By the end of the week something had happened, I realised that I had somehow befriended my fear, that it was no longer a fear. It had in fact become a source of strength to me.

Again and again the bible tells us 'fear not’ - do not be afraid. God can turn the wrongs we have done or have had done to us - or the fears that we face into the very means of our salvation.

We need to take time to reflect. There are two ways that can help us. One good way is to reveal our fears to someone we can trust - who will listen and accept us.

The other is to be open with God in prayer. As we try, often he helps us to see our weaknesses and ourselves more clearly. We also discover that he loves and accepts us deeply just as we are, and as we begin to trust him which is the inevitable consequence - our fears seem to melt away or somehow become that source of strength.

Enjoy your holidays but take time to reflect. It could bring new life for the coming year.

Linda Munt

PUBLIC MEETING

12th July at 7.30 pm in Bramham Village Hall

To launch the preparation of the Parish Plan.

This is your chance to have a say in the future of your village - SO COME ALONG

Grass Cutting

The volunteer army of grass cutters in the churchyard is growing nearly as fast as the grass. Thank you all so much for working so hard to keeping the churchyard looking neat and tidy. The wild flower area will be cut later in the summer.

Grave Plots

A copy has been made of the Grave Register and we have discovered that there are many unmarked plots. If you have any information about any of the unmarked graves we would be pleased to hear from you. During the year we do have requests from relatives about family graves and so often we cannot locate the correct grave for them.

Large Print books in Church

We are ordering a few large print hymn books and books of Common Worship for members of the congregation with poor eye-sight.

Children’s Fun Day

Helpers are required at the Family Fun Day in Bramham Park on Sunday 18th July - 12.30 pm to 4.30 pm. Bramham Church is running a Cake Stall. Peggy Kitchen has agreed to run this stall and she will be pleased to receive any contributions. Please contact her if you can help with baking or manning the stall. (Tel: 843378).

Walton Church are having a Bric-a-Brac stall. A Barbecue is going on all afternoon. There will be a Treasure Hunt around the Park, Police Dog demonstration and many other attractions.

See separate notice on page 11.

Bramham Park gardens are open to everyone buying a ticket for the Fun Day (included in the price of the ticket). Admission price is £1 per head for adults and 50p for children under 16. Under 5’s free on the day. However tickets bought in advance are £2 per car with four people. These can be obtained from Anne Palmer, or from church.

We welcome any offers of help for this event. If you will be on holiday and would like to support the event, please send us a prize for the Tombola, a cake for the Cake Stall or a cash donation will be well received

Please come along to support the event and have an enjoyable day in Bramham Park.

THE YORKSHIRE COUNTRYWOMEN’S ASSOCIATION

The speaker at our May meeting was Mrs M Urquart who spoke on the “Elixir of Life”, otherwise our favourite beverage, TEA!

After giving an entertaining history of tea, Mrs Urquhart encouraged members to purchase a wide range of items she had brought, in aid of her other interest, The Guide Dog for the Blind Charity, her fee also going to the same good cause.

Our next meeting on Wednesday 21st July is the Summer Social, to be held at Mrs Barton’s home, The Crag, Bramham at 7.00 pm.

NEWS FROM BRAMHAM SCHOOL

Another very busy and successful year in school has only a few more weeks to run before we have a summer break.

I hope our children will continue through the holidays with the wealth of physical activity they have been involved in at school.

We have introduced many sports over and above the PE that we have during the normal curriculum. At the moment we have athletics, football, netball, rugby and gym running after school or at lunch time.

After many years of thinking about it we now have a School Council set up and ready to help improve the lives of all pupils at school. Their first job will be to decide how to spend the profits raised at the Healthy Tuck Shop which is run by pupils every break time. We have bought outdoor seating and games with the money raised in the past so it will be interesting to see what else they would like.

Our Summer Fair will be taking place on Saturday July 10th and all are very

welcome to come along. We will have on offer a warm sunny day, refreshments, BBQ , Bramham Dance Group, Cream Teas, a Balloon Race, Games and other activities and throughout the afternoon a select group from York Light Orchestra will entertain us with a varied programme of music.

The churches in the local area have contributed to Wednesday morning assemblies throughout the year and we thank them for their time and enthusiasm.

BRAMHAM VILLAGE HALL NEWS

The observant members of the village will have noticed planning applications around the Village Hall. These were submitted on behalf of the Trustees to provide the additional space needed to carry out the refurbishment of the toilets and the addition of a disabled toilet - hopefully with baby changing facilities.

The extension is not huge, it just extends the supper room entrance area to square off with the main hall and the supper room. The resultant space will become new toilets removing the separate supper room entrance.

A copy of the draft plan will be displayed in the hall in due course for anyone interested.

The Village Hall’s allocation from last year’s Bramham Park Festival has been partly used on the feasibility study and the planning application. The balance will hopefully go towards an electrical survey and electrical work needed for new lighting in the hall.

The downside to the planning application is that the first estimate we received for the building and fitting work was for £48,000 just for the toilet refurbishment. At the current rate of fund raising it will take us over 3 years to reach this total.

On a brighter note the last fund raising event, Boccigalupe and the Badboys all the way from New Jersey USA, was another superb success, all thanks to Keith Robinson. Over £1000 profits was raised on the bar for the restoration fund – and we ran out of lager!!. The band has expressed a wish to return to Bramham Village Hall in November when they next tour the UK.

The winning numbers for the village hall draw are 94(£25), 21, 99, 106, 115, 118, 122, 154, 157, 168, 178 (all £5).

BRAMHAM GUIDES

We are reaching the end of another great year with the Guides. Thank you to all who have supported us this year.

We are going to Norwich to a Water Activity Camp in August where the girls will try out kayaking, canoeing, raft building and many other activities.

We will be sleeping in our new tents purchased with the money received from the Community Fund and we are hoping the good weather will still be with us.

If anyone over 10 is interested in joining us in September, please contact me over the summer. (Tel: 843197).

The Rangers also extend a welcome to any girls over the age of 14 who would like to join.

INVITATION TO CHURCH ON SATURDAY EVENINGS

We have now held three services on the fourth Saturday of April, May and June and we are delighted that families came for this service of Family Worship.

As promised the service lasts forty minutes and is children friendly.

The next Saturday service is on July 24th at 6.00 pm and you are warmly welcomed to attend.

Please come as you are and bring your friends with you. It is a good way to finish off the week, to reflect for a moment on the deeper things and to be still in the midst of a busy life.

We are hoping that this service will become a feature of our village and our Church.

As recorded in our May edition of this magazine, the results of the Census 2001 have been made available and the data for the parish of Bramham make fascinating reading. There is a population of 1755.

26.5% are under 19, 62% are under 44 and only 16% are over 60. We live in a young village and the Church must make every effort to relate to its people.

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the next service on Saturday 24th July 2004 at 6.00 pm.

Stanley Menzies
