‘A’ LEVEL STUDENT MAKES HER DIRECTORIAL DEBUT

An 18 year old ‘A’ level student from Bramham is set to make her debut this week when a one-act play she has directed is performed by Bramham Drama Group in the local village hall.

Despite the pressures of studying for exams, Robyn Henderson, who is taking A levels in Art, Theatre Studies & Product Design at St Aidan’s Church of England High School, Harrogate, is putting the finishing touches to the play ‘A Funny Thing Didn’t Happen’ which was performed on Saturday, 26th June and again at Boston Spa School on Friday, 9th July 2004 during a Drama Festival organised by the school.

The comedy, written by the late Dorothy Galvin (a former contemporary of Dora Bryan), is an hilarious ‘play within a play’ with the actors playing a drama group rehearsing for a play set in Rome – a sort of Up Pompeii meets Hilda Baker!

Robyn is well known in the village through her activities with the Guides having recently obtained her full leader status in charge of 1st Bramham Rangers.

In her capacity as a Guider she visited Thailand in 2002 and Mexico in 2003 where she joined other guides in carrying out humanitarian projects in under privileged communities. In July she is off again for a month - this time to Pune in India to fulfil a similar task.

Robyn’s interest in drama goes back to primary school days when she first joined Bramham Drama Group with her parents. Since that time she has had a variety of parts in several pantomimes over the years and has helped backstage in school productions.

If successful in her exams, Robyn is hoping to continue her love of the stage at York, St John College where she hopes to study for a BA in Theatre, Film & TV Production.

BRAMHAM YOUTH CLUB

We would like to congratulate Danny, Josh, David, Joe and Richard for winning the Youth Service 5 a side football.

They have played various football matches at Boston Spa School which has been organised through the Youth Service - and during the half term holidays they held a tournament at Kirkstall Sports Centre. They had a thoroughly enjoyable time and we are very proud of them. Well done lads!

The club will be closing for the summer holidays on Friday 25th June .

We hope to see all our members at the

Fun Run on 11th July, - starting from Bowcliffe Hall at 11.30 am . There will be a BBQ afterwards at the White Horse. Mick (the landlord) is to donate all profits to the Football Team and the Youth Club. Thank you Mick.

Also, John at our local Post Office will provide bottles of water for everyone taking part on the run (free of charge). If the weather is anything like it has been during the last two fun runs it will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you John.

NEWS FROM THE BROWNIES

Hi Everyone!

This is the last term and boy are we ready for it. Always a busy one and this is no exception.

Starting off with Brownie Revels. All the girls enjoy this event and it takes place at Boston Spa. Then we have the Sport Day - another enjoyable event.

We have decided to finish off with an end-of-term party and we are going to have the Biggest Bouncy Castle ever!, also a BBQ and lots of fun and games.

Any new Brownies who want to come along and join in the fun, please do so. You can meet me, the other helpers and the other Brownies. If all goes to plan this is going to take place on the 17th July at 2.00 pm till 6.00 pm.

A very kind person has offered to hire the Village Hall for us this year, so in September we intend to have a Coffee Morning with a few stalls and a raffle in the hope of raising funds for Euro 2005. We will be round the village handing out leaflets and then collecting any unwanted gifts etc, the week after, a bit like we did last year. So save them for us!!

Brownies finishes on the day of the party and due to the holiday I have booked, will not be starting back until 14th September.

Four Brownies will be leaving in July and going to Guides including my daughter, so if anyone would like to join us, please give me a ring on 842268.

Just left for me to say have a wonderful summer holiday and see you all in September.

Brown Owl

NEWS FROM THE METHODISTS

Rev G Ridley TEL: 01937 8842156

Lay Worker Liz Green TEL: 0113 2864763

Services & Sunday School 10-00 am each Sunday

1st Sunday is Family Worship

Watch Out For details of MAD CLUB past and present disco/Party Posters and invites on their way.

Hi Folks,

Well this really is the final letter from Liz. I’ll still be there on Sunday mornings and the occasional coffee morning. So you will still see me I’m afraid. I am starting a new life, a new job and all that.

The Church will continue to be open as usual . With the exception of MAD Club and Little Tykes all will be as usual. The Church is not closing only the Lay Workers Post, so we will continue to spread the Good News of God throughout the village. Coffee mornings will carry on , as will the Guides, Drama and others who use our premises.

I still hear voices saying “I wish we could refurbish the Chapel it would be great” .There are still a lot of you with memories of bygone days when Chapel was full with Boys Brigade Sunday school and other activities. The future as always is in God’s hands but he needs workers and that means you. So pray for God’s Will to be done.

I thank God for the opportunity of serving him in this village I will have long happy memories of all that has gone on here and I hope you will too.

Our Sunday services started off with 3/4. Then there were 12 now we have around 14 so we are growing by a very big percentage. We are friendly and have tried various styles of worship, assemblies are taken in the Primary School and more. God is good and we will ask His blessing on all that we continue to do, knowing that He hears and will answer our prayer.

My love and Prayers go out to you all so its goodbye from me. Go out there, live a little, love each other, serve your neighbour and make this corner of the world a better place.

Praise God in all that you do and He will reward his faithful servants.

BRAMHAM PARISH COUNCIL

The Council has been asked for clarification over the allocation of Residents’ Tickets for the Carling Leeds Festival in August. In particular, some residents erroneously assumed from the letter from the promoter, Mean Fiddler, that all applications would be successful. Originally Mean Fiddler offered the village 200 tickets to enable residents to attend at an advantageous rate. Mean Fiddler did this on the express condition that the Council ensured that only genuine residents of the village were to be granted tickets. Applications were received for a total of 500 tickets by the closing date. Many of these included friends and relatives not living in the village, and excluding them brought the number of applications down to 361. This was discussed with Mean Fiddler, who generously agreed to increase the allocation to 361 tickets, subject to the strict rules about residency being confirmed by identification for every ticket allocated. All the tickets have been allocated and will be sent out about a week before the event.

Mean Fiddler has also asked the Council to reassure residents that whilst their entertainment licence runs until midnight on each of the 4 nights, the live music on the main stage is scheduled to take place up to 11 pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. On the Thursday night and between 11 pm and midnight on other nights, there will only be music on the minor stages which will not be audible in the village. Of course, the licence does allow for minor over-runs on the main stage as happened on the Friday last year.

One issue that this activity has thrown up is that a significant number of residents, and not just people recently moved to the village, are not on the electoral roll. The Council encourages residents who did not receive the recent postal vote documents to check with Leeds City Council Elections on 0113 247 6726 that their details are correctly recorded.

West Yorkshire Police has decided to strengthen their community representation in the villages in this area, and the Council is pleased to welcome PC Kate Dunn, who has a role in Bramham, Clifford and Boston Spa. One issue which she has asked the Council to raise with residents is the recent spate of theft of high value items such as mountain bikes and golfing equipment from sheds and garages. These areas tend not to be protected by the usual security measures such as mortice locks and alarms and may also not be covered by insurance. PC Dunn will regularly be available to meet with residents to discuss their policing issues in the Old Peoples’ Shelter. Dates and times are published on the Parish notice board.

The Council has secured a grant from the Countryside Agency to produce the Parish Plan. There will be a public meeting in the Village Hall on Monday 12th July at 7.30 pm to launch the preparation of the plan. This is your chance to have a say in the future of your village.

CRIME PREVENTION TIPS

Going on holiday

Before going on holiday, ask your neighbours to keep an eye on your home while you are away.

Ask them to pick up mail if it builds up into a pile behind the front door. If you are away for an extended period ask your neighbour to cut your lawns. Of course you can offer to do the same when they are away.

Garages and Sheds

Keep garages and sheds locked so that the thief cannot use your tools and ladders to help them break into your home, or a neighbours.

Pay particular attention in the summer months when there is more a tendency to leave things open.

Using Photographs

Think about taking photos of your valuable items. This may be helpful for items not suitable for postcode marking.

(Free ultra-violet Security Marker Pens still available from Church).

Bogus Callers

Not all burglars break into homes - some will try to trick or con their way in. They are known as bogus callers and will pretend to be on official business from respectable concerns such as the Utility Companies - Gas, Electricity , Water or the Council. They may claim to be tradesmen or workmen calling to carry out urgent repairs. They may even claim to be Police Officers.

Genuine callers should carry an identification card, preferably displaying their photograph. Do check this carefully.

If you are still not satisfied, do not let them in. Ask the caller to come back later and arrange for a friend or neighbour to be present on their return. Treat every stranger with caution. If you are still worried dial 999 immediately and ask for the Police.

ARTICLES FOR THIS MAGAZINE

It would be extremely helpful if items for publication in Bramham Parish Magazine could be submitted on the due date i.e. 15th of each month, otherwise I cannot always guarantee they will appear.

I have to comply with a deadline provided by A1 Press, Wetherby, who print the magazines, in order to have them ready for delivery on the lst of the month. In addition a date has to be booked for the stapling and delivery to the deliverers.

So you will appreciate if the receipt date

for articles is not adhered to, this affects the other agreed dates for printing, stapling and delivery and so makes life unnecessarily difficult and stressful for our willing volunteers.

In an emergency I have been known to be lenient, but unfortunately it is the same people who are regularly late every month and so hold up the production. Please, please try and do better!!!
