Bramham Parish News

Fr Hugh writes:-
This month will see us arrive at the first day of Lent (this year Wednesday 9th of February), and in Lent we give up things. Often they are things that we know we really shouldn't do anyway - swearing, being selfish or unhelpful perhaps, or eating too much chocolate. But the tradition began with a much more serious abstinence, with genuine fasting, and the wearing of sackcloth and ashes as a sign of penitence: hence, Ash Wednesday. Fasting, like prayer and almsgiving, is one of the marks of religious observance common to Christianity, Judaism and Islam. "Giving up", of course, has another meaning in English. When we reach the end of our tether, when it all gets too much, there is a temptation to say, "That's it. I give up." Having tried everything, we decide that enough is enough and the situation really is hopeless. Lent, when we recall the time that Jesus spent in the wilderness, is a vivid reminder that God never gives up on us. Jesus, faced with hunger and isolation and fear of the unknown, resisted the temptation to give up, to turn aside from His mission and surrender to the lure of worldly power and glory. He put His Faith firmly in His Heavenly Father. Alone in the wilderness, He fasted, prayed and prepared for His ministry and its inevitable outcome: the ultimate act of giving, laying down His life. Jesus has given us this message: practise your Faith in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. The message not to flaunt your Faith, however, is not the same as hiding it. When Jesus tells his followers to pray in secret, to fast in secret, to give to the poor in secret, He is NOT saying to us, "Don't let on you're a Christian!" It is not our Faith which we must keep from the world, but an ostentatious display of it. Whether it is almsgiving, prayer or fasting, Jesus tells us we should do it not for human admiration, but for God. Then, the reward we are promised is not something transitory like public acclaim; it is nothing less than the love of a Heavenly Father for His children. Repeatedly, Jesus speaks of "Your Father." In the Lord's Prayer He urges us to pray to "Our Father". Worldly treasures like wealth, power and popularity are nothing in comparison with the heavenly treasures in store for us if our hearts are in the right place: with God. There is an organic relationship between fasting, prayer and almsgiving. In fasting, we deny ourselves luxuries which distance us from God; prayer brings us closer to God; and our love for God spills over into our dealings with others. Other people are then no longer those whose admiration we crave, but those with whom we want to share the love of God. When this happens, we gladly deny ourselves unnecessary extras, so that we have enough to give to others. Every celebration of The Eucharist (Holy Communion) commemorates again those amazing events of Good Friday and Easter, the vivid proof that God NEVER gives up on us. So let us make sure that our "giving up" is not just for Lent, but for life. Fr Hugh

A Thank You From George
Peggy & George Kitchen would like to thank everyone for the wonderful kind support shown to them during George’s recent illness. The response has been overwhelming both from friends and business customers . After 46 years trading as a joiner and funeral director I am now going to take it easy and the funeral side of the business will be carried on with the same care and attention by David Townend of Follifoot, whose Chapel of Rest I have always used. (see my advert on page 21). Thank you all once again.
George

NELLIE GREENHEAD nee HILL June, Robin and Annette would like to thank all friends, relatives and neighbours for their kind expressions of sympathy received during their recent bereavement. Also for donations to All Saints’ church and Cancer Research. Many thanks also to Fr Hugh for his comforting service and to Tony Barker & Sons for all their help and support at this sad time.

A CALENDAR FOR BRAMHAM
Bramham branch of the NSPCC would like to raise the profile of this worthy charity by producing a calendar for 2006. We would like to invite entries into a photographic competition entitled modern Day Bramham” from residents, social and sports groups, employers, schools etc. Hopefully, judging in varied categories and selection for the calendar will take place in the Village Hall some time in September 2005, so you have nearly 9 months in which to capture the “Spirit of our Village”.

FROM THE CHURCHWARDENS
CHRISTMAS 2004 was celebrated in grand style. We began with the BAZAAR and Santa Claus’ visit to the Village Hall, many thanks to everyone who organised the stalls which were overflowing with amazing goodies. A huge thank you to all our customers who supported the event and those who purchased the Christmas Draw tickets. We raised in excess of £1,600 for Church Funds. Thank you all very much indeed. The Church looked absolutely lovely after the team of Flower Arrangers had completed the decoration, - What would we do without these talented people?
THE CAROL SERVICE was held on a Saturday evening and this did cause a bit of confusion amongst the regulars. Even though this had been advertised in the Magazine and every household had received a special card with all the services listed for the Christmas period. However – we will ensure that in 2005 we return to a SUNDAY. We had to make the change because we had the first ever Brass Band Carol Concert at Bramham Park and this was the only date the Band were available.
THE DRIGLINGTON BRASS BAND CONCERT The first time we have had the opportunity of holding a Christmas Concert at Bramham Park on Sunday 19th December, this was a truly memorable event and we are indebted to Nick and Rachel Lane Fox and all the family for allowing us to use their beautiful home to stage this concert. £1,000 was raised for Church Funds. The PCC would like to thank all the sponsors for this event. Rachel Lane Fox, Anthony and Marcia Wakeham for supplying the food, John Batty at Bramham Stores for supplying all the wine, Browns for supplying the chairs for the concert, and finally Claudia Langamead and her team at Bramham Park for organising this event. The Concert was excellent and by popular request we have booked the Driglington Brass Band to return for a second concert on Sunday 18th December 2005 at Bramham Park. All profits from this event will go to All Saints’ Parish Church, Bramham. Tickets will be on sale in late September for this event and they will be limited to 90. I strongly advise you to book your tickets at the earliest opportunity.
THE CHURCHYARD PCC are extremely grateful to the Bramham Community Fund for the grant of £1,000 we received for the All Saints’ Churchyard project. We have received advice from The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and as soon as the weather improves we will begin our plans for the Churchyard. A day time site meeting would be useful and I suggest that if you are interested in helping with this task of keeping the Churchyard in a tidy condition will you please give Anne Palmer a ring 842850. Provisional date of Saturday 12th February?
VANDALISM IN AND AROUND THE CHURCH The Lych Gate suffered in the latest spate of Graffiti early this month and at great inconvenience to members of the PCC we had the offending mess removed. Also one of the stained glass windows has been smashed and is being repaired. As you will appreciate this is a highly specialised task and therefore very expen sive, but essential that we replace and conserve this magnificent building. All this adds to the heavy costs the Church has to find.
Both incidents have been reported to the Police who have been extremely helpful. If you have any information about either of these incidents please will you ring the Police 0113 232 2096 or contact Fr. Hugh Lawrance or members of the Parochial Church Council and give them the names of the offenders. We have a crime number and the Police are awaiting your call. Anne Palmer & Peggy Kitchen

BRAMHAM VILLAGE HALL NEWS
The Village Hall Committee would like to express their thanks to all those who hired the hall or supported the fund raising events in the hall during 2004. The hire charges paid the running costs and profits from the fund raising will be used during 2005 to upgrade the facilities, hopefully starting with the electrics. We also want to replace the roof over the large kitchen to prevent the constant leak though the ceiling. It has been disappointing to have received very little response to requests for quotations for upgrading the electrics and for the building work. Without those quotations we are unable to apply for the many grants that are available to villages and rural communities. We will continue to try to find firms willing to provide quotations but if anyone reading this knows of a firm willing to provide a quote please contact either Christine Suddaby (849455) or Sue Craven (842991). We would also like to thank Kath and Ken Hardy who look after the property. During 2004 a new maintenance schedule has been introduced for them. They also redecorated the supper room and small kitchen during the year. We hope that users are aware of these improvements. The end of 2004 saw a flurry of activity and a near miss! We had the return of the Jazz and Soul Bands from Boston Spa school in November which was a fantastic evening’s music and was well supported – we even had to bring in additional seating. A generous donation was made to the band and there were significant bar profits. December heralded the return of the ABBA tribute band, the audience comprising work colleagues of the organiser plus village residents. Again a good night was had by all. The near miss in December occurred when vandals threw a large firework into the cloakroom area near the ladies toilets. Fortunately the large bang alerted the caretaker and his reaction meant the damage was limited. Police and forensic officers attended the scene and the perpetrators are being sought. 2005 will see more activities each month. The first one in January saw a smaller but very enthusiastic audience appreciate an excellent Soul band. February 19th’s event will be a fund raiser for the Tsunami disaster, specifically to fund equipment taken out to the disaster area by Dr Tim Ubhi from the village who has travelled out there to provide medical assistance. March 19th will see a new type of event – an Indian band and Indian cuisine – watch for details. Can we remind those who have draw numbers and expressed a desire to pay by standing order that the payments should start in 2005. Please make sure your bank has been provided with the mandates – further mandates available from Tess Ferres. The winning numbers in December were 45(£25), 10, 16, 24, 25, 27, 61, 70, 113, 121, 155 (all £5)
Christine Suddaby (on behalf of the Village Hall Committee)

THE YORKSHIRE COUNTRYWOMEN’S ASSOCIATION
The YCA would like to express their thanks to the Bramham Community Fund for the grant of £200. In November we held a very pleasant and productive meeting with Mrs L. Hirons learning the art of Christmas Crafts, followed in December by our Annual Christmas Party. This year the party was held at the home of Mrs Barton. An excellent supper was enjoyed by all. The accompanying wine (and soft drinks) flowed, as did the conservation and it made a good start to the Christmas festivities. Our speaker in on 16th February in the Village Hall will be Mr Bob Preedy, of the Wetherby Film Theatre. This should be a most interesting talk and visitors will be most welcome.

HELP THE VICTIMS OF THE TSUNAMI
At the same time enjoy the LOSERVILLE Band from Sweden
Saturday 19th February in Bramham Village Hall Tickets £10 from Bramham Post Office or Keith Robinson 845651 Dr Tim Ubhi who lives in Bramham is travelling out to Thailand to use his medical skills to help identify those who died and to treat those who survived with serious injuries. He will be taking with him drugs & vaccines that will in a small way help prevent the spread of secondary disease that could spark a further tragedy. Although Tim has managed to obtain free flights and subsidised accommodation, the costs of his trip and the medical supplies could run to almost £3000 so he needs our support. With the profit from the sale of tickets and bar profits for the evening, coupled with extra fund raising on the night, I am confident we can raise at least £3000. Keith Robinson
