BRAMHAM MUM AND TOTS

“Little Tykes”

As a group we should really go under the heading of Mums, Dads, Grandmas, Childminders and Tots, although this would take up a lot of space! We currently have a Dad who was brave enough to face a room full of women and now regularly brings his little boy to our Monday morning sessions at the Methodist Church on Low Way. We have in the past had Grandmothers and Childminders who have also attended the group.

Mostly though there are Mums who come to enjoy some company and a chance for their children to play in a safe and friendly environment with other pre-school children and babies. As yet we have no Grandfathers in the group but they would be very welcome!

In June, Jo who runs “Jo Jingles” music classes for children from 6 months to 5 years in the Methodist Church at Tadcaster, came along to give us a half hour taster session. The children enjoyed singing and dancing along with the songs, having a chance to play some instruments and join in with the actions. Jo will also come to children’s parties.

We will continue to run over the school summer holidays and in addition to the Monday mornings we are planning some outings so that parents and carers can visit some local child friendly places in the company of others.

THE YORKSHIRE COUNTRYWOMEN’S

ASSOCIATION

Our May meeting saw the welcome return of Mrs Lyn Hirons, whose talk and demonstration saw members busily engaged making their own hand crafted dolls. The meeting extended beyond the usual finishing time, much to everyone’s enjoyment.

On Sunday, the 3rd July , we are holding an “Open Garden” at the home of Mr & Mrs Derek Barton, The Bungalow, The Crag, Bramham from 2-4 pm The entrance fee will be £2.50, £1 for small children, and will include a cream tea. Mrs Barton’s collection of miniatures and dolls houses will be on display and there will a ‘bun and biscuit stall ‘and a raffle, all proceeds from the event going to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance Fund.

Our meeting in July, Wednesday 20th will be a visit in the afternoon to the home of Mr & Mrs David Machin, in Menston, to which husbands are cordially invited.

There will be no meeting in August.

CRIME PREVENTION PANEL

The Crime Prevention Panel works in conjunction with the local Police to help prevent Crime by making you, the public, aware of what many criminals enjoy as a ‘Days Work’ at your expense.

Over the last couple of years the Panel have produced and circulated, a Crime Prevention booklet and UV Marker Pens to over 10,000 homes along with a variety of other leaflets advising you how best to take precautions within the home, garage, garden, garden shed and greenhouse, including advice about planting thorny thief deterrent plants close to easily accessible windows.

Information has also been issued about theft of many items from cars and vans including laptop computers left on view inside of the vehicle. Suggested precautions have also been circulated about how to prevent the theft of and from vehicles. All items of value, including telephones, CD’s Bags, Jackets, sunglasses etc should always be removed from the unattended vehicle and not only at night. You should also have regard to the security of your car and house keys at all times.

Inside or outside of the home, bags, wallets and other valuables should not be left on show especially on top of work areas. Keys should never be left in the door or on view from windows as this could allow the thief quick and easy access.

The Panel has completed a project of installing an additional telephone extension placed at the bedside, for some of the vulnerable and/or elderly residents. Currently, plans are at the final stage of arranging for the installation of approximately 200 ‘Dusk to Dawn’ Solar Powered, security lights.

Panel Members also go out and about to many groups and organisations to discuss Crime Prevention and are able to run a short video film about Distraction Burglary.

The above, are just a small selection from the tasks that have been carried out by the Crime Prevention Panel.

The Panel is always looking for new ideas for projects. Like the Police, they wish to try and keep ahead of the criminal. Do you have any suggestions for a project you think the Panel may like to work on? If you do, then we would be pleased to hear about it.

All projects adopted by the Panel, as always, cost money. If you, your business, or organisation, would like to make a contribution, sponsor a project or leaflet, or place an advertisement on one of our projects, subject to approval, this could be arranged. Speak to a member of the panel or contact the Chairman on the telephone 01937 582441 or mobile 07711 150 438.

BRAMHAM PARISH COUNCIL

At the meeting on 1 June, the Council met with Bramham in Bloom, the Environment Group formed from the Parish Plan. The group indicated that it was not intending to be competitive at this stage, merely to bring Bramham up to the standard of some of our neighbouring villages. The group was keen to clarify that its plans did not conflict with any Council plans. This largely turned out to be the case, and the Council supports the activities of the group, and the only area for careful consideration is the War Memorial, where some long standing arrangements are in place. The position of Council funding for the group’s activities, and of the other Parish Plan groups, is expected to be discussed at the July meeting, when it is expected that the Plan will be formally endorsed by the Council.

Given the number of comments that have been made regarding the allocation of residents’ tickets for the Leeds Festival, it might be useful if the situation is clarified. The agreement between the promoter (Mean Fiddler), Bramham Park and the Parish Council is to provide an opportunity for residents of the village to attend the festival on advantageous terms. The number of tickets available under this agreement is 360 and the Council believes that this should be sufficient, given that it represents 25% of the entire population of the village over 13 years of age. There has never been any intention that these tickets should be used by friends, relatives, colleagues or any other people not resident in the village.

By the closing date, the Council had received applications for 600 tickets, all signed by people agreeing that they were for use by bona-fide residents! The Council had to determine who should be offered the 360 tickets. Whilst it was clear that some of the applicants seem unlikely ever to attend a 3-day rock festival, the Council does not have the resources, nor is it willing to pass a judgement on every single application, and accordingly a ballot was conducted, with the Councillors drawing numbers. The Council regrets that a ballot was necessary, and believes that some applicants, with apparently selfish motives, are denying attendance to bona-fide residents, and in particular disappointing many young people of the village.

Both the Council and Mean Fiddler are disappointed at this situation, and are determined, where possible, to ensure that only residents of the village use the tickets. Accordingly, each ticket will be inscribed with the resident’s name, and photo-ID to match that name will be required to gain entrance to the festival site.

This scheme, which has been highly successful in previous years, involves the Council in considerable administrative activity. If residents abuse the facility, the possibility arises that the scheme may be withdrawn altogether. If that becomes the case, nobody will be offered advantageous tickets, and the village will lose out on the funds for local good causes.

The Highways Agency exhibition on the future of the A1 in this area is expected to be held in the Village Hall in mid-July.

The ongoing activities of the Steering Group following the publication of the Parish Plan are likely to require the services of a secretary/administrator. Anyone interested should, in the first instance contact the Clerk or Cllr Bob Gibson.

NEWS FROM BRAMHAM SCHOOL

Bramham School will be working with a new Head teacher from September 2005 as I am taking early retirement. I have been here as Head for 17 years and have had over 36 years in teaching. A lot of memories have flowed under the bridge in that time and I am looking forward to a very busy retirement.

School has about five weeks of term time left but they will be busy weeks. We have a trip into Leeds to the Town Hall this month to listen to a full orchestra and follow up our Music Project of last half term.

A day will be spent at Bramham Park following the life of the Park. Classes 3 and 4 will see trees being recovered and wildlife nurtured and a whole host of other things that make the Park a working estate.

New Starters will come into school on two occasions to meet us and see where their new class in September will be. Parents will leave them in Class 1 to talk to myself and Mrs Payne.

School Sports Day will be at 1.00 pm on June 29th. All are welcome to come along and enjoy a sunny afternoon of fun activities.

The Summer Fair will take place on the afternoon of July 16th and is always an excellent afternoon of events ranging from face painting to balloon racing and on to teas, a BBQ and a musical entertainment slot.

Some of our children move on to other schools this term and we always keep an eye on them as they move through other levels of education. I have contacts with former pupils who have either confirmed what we guessed they might achieve or totally surprised us with their achievements. Is this one of the things that makes teaching an amazing profession?

Dear Friends

I remember an episode from a Vicar of Dibley series entitled “Celebrity Vicar” where Geraldine finds herself thrust into the media spotlight. Before long she is a media darling, receiving invitations to appear on numerous shows. Her new found status is embraced with typical verve and panache. Unfortunately it all goes to her head and in time she discovers, to her cost, that fame can be a very fragile thing as it all comes crashing to her feet. Like a lot of good comedy it does touch on some fundamental issues for society. For example, take the relationship between the Church and the Media. In recent years it could be described as a rather fragile thing. It seems many in the church feel with certain justification that religious broadcasting has become marginalized or that Christians are sometimes unfairly portrayed. Stereotyping is an issue, as is the tendency sometimes to simply offer sound bytes rather than a broader and more true presentation of the facts where faith issues are concerned.

However, it is not all negative and I was very much encouraged by an article that appeared in a recent edition of the Methodist Recorder. The article was entitled, “BBC and the place of religion in broadcasting”. It referred to a ground-breaking seminar that took place in London entitled “Taking Belief Seriously”. Convened by the BBC’s Board of Governors, broadcasting executives, programme makers and various representatives of the faith communities in Britain it sought to address some essential questions surrounding religion in the media. At the close of the seminar the director-general of the BBC, Mark Thompson, commented, “In the past, religious programming has been associated with duty and caution rather than energy and life….. this morning’s seminar has been one of the most wide-ranging and creatively inspiring on the subject for many years. It will have a big impact as we develop our Creative Future programme strategy.” Summing up the chairman of the governors, Michael Grade said, “Hopefully, the results will show evidence of the stimulation engendered here this morning. The test will be the lasting creative ripples it creates for the benefit of audiences.”

We look forward to them with anticipation.

Rev’d Gary Ridley
