All Saints’ Church Bramham
Incorporating news from St Luke’s Clifford

Bramham Parish News

As soon as someone says, "rock," what springs into your mind? Sticky tooth-breaking confectionary from Scarborough, the Leeds Festival at Bramham Park, getting an infant to sleep, breathtaking scenery in the Yorkshire Dales, people climbing, upsetting someone by making a boat wobble or a hard substance to fall against?

Or, "Rocky." Sylvester Stallone in the boxing ring, or something failing, as in a marriage or just having a difficult time? Perhaps this month we could think of rock that is solid, totally firm and forming a really solid dependable base. Jesus said to Peter, "You are a rock, and on this rock I will build my Church, and the jaws of death will not prevail against it."

This was a unique moment, it was not said to any other disciple. And it has comfort for us, for whatever rocky patch we go through, and however rocky our behaviour or attitudes can be, however we put our foot in it by blurting out the first thing we think of, we are loved by Our Lord as we are. Christ accepts all of it - and uses it.

We know very well what a let-down Peter was when he was needed most. At the exact moment of his lying and cursing on the night of Jesus' betrayal, he saw his Lord looking at him and forgiving him, there and then. We believe in the life and sacrifice of St Peter as much as we believe in, "the communion of Saints." They are those who pray with us but that they are upon a golden altar before the throne of God. Peter after failing, repented and changed his ways and was loyal to Christ unto death.

St Peter reminds us of how much each and every one of us is both loved and accepted as we are. We may strive to be perfect but we know that we never will be here on earth. The example of St Peter, and all the Holy Saints, never lets us have an excuse to give up on that basis. We always have God's love and forgiveness however much of a let-down we may be.

Think of St Peter (his day is the 29th June) and how some of the most magnificent Churches in the world are under his patronage, St Peter's in Rome, Westminster Abbey, Exeter Cathedral, York Minster, Howden Minster - all pale into insignificance against the best one of them all - St Peter's Walton!

God bless you all. Fr Hugh.

FROM THE CHURCHWARDENS

The Stained Glass window is being repaired and will hopefully be back in place before the “Wedding” season begins. This window was vandalised earlier in the year and has cost £744 plus VAT to repair. Can we yet again appeal to residents in the village to report any incidents of vandalism to the Police, and if you have your digital camera to hand you could capture the scene for evidence!!!

CHURCHYARD The new mower is working well and making light work of the grass cutting. Please, Please, Please do not leave any rubbish, grass clippings, dead flowers, bottles etc., etc., behind you when you have tided up your own family grave. The Dustbin Lorry does not pick up any rubbish from the Churchyard.

VE and VJ Day 60th Commemorations in 2005

2005 sees the 60th Anniversary on 8th May of the Victory in Europe (VE Day) and on 15th August of the Victory over Japan (VJ day) which, together, saw the end of the 2nd World War.

It has been decided that Sunday 10th July will be National Commemorative Day as it is mid-way between VE and VJ day anniversaries.

The Commemorations will start with a service at Westminster Abbey followed by a Commemorative Event of Reflection and Reminiscence, led by Her Majesty the Queen and members of HM Government in Horse Guards Parade at 3.00 pm on Sunday 10th July. Mrs Elizabeth Bustard from Lyndon Square Bramham has had an invitation and will be attending.

A monument to the women who served their country during the Second World War will be unveiled in Whitehall on Saturday 9 July 2005 by The Queen.

Mrs Elizabeth Bustard’s Pilgrimage to India

The Royal British Legion, have been organising Pilgrimages to the War Graves in India as part of Veterans Re-united and recently, Mrs Elizabeth Bustard accompanied by her son Major Kenneth Bustard MBE took part in a Pilgrimage to Delhi.

During the pilgrimage they attended a Service of Remembrance in New Delhi War Cemetery and Mrs Bustard laid a wreath on behalf of the Royal British Legion Women’s Section from United Kingdom on 12th April.

During their visit they met the High Commissioner to India and visited other war cemeteries in Madras Mrs Bustard’s late husband Reg, who died 4 years ago fought in Burma with the Royal Norfolk Regiment. Mrs Bustard had an unforgettable visit to India.

Mrs Bustard went out with the Heroes Return programme which is part of a special Lottery programme called Veterans Reunited, set up to make grants to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the remarkable events that led to the end of the Second World War and to ensure that new generations can learn from their experiences.

UK residents who saw active service and widow/widowers of veterans are eligible for this grant. All interested parties should telephone 0845 00 00121 for further information.

YORKSHIRE COUNTRYWOMEN’S ASSOCIATION

Firstly, we would like to thank all our own members and friends from the village who so kindly supported our open meeting in April, featuring the well-known gardening expert, Kate Garton.

We were very pleased that the raffle raised £70 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance fund, which is our Charity this year. Thank you to everyone.

Secondly, we are quite proud that at the YCA Homecraft Competition at Wetherby, open to every branch in Yorkshire, one of our members, Mrs Gill Young took second place in the flower arranging class and in the Branch entry, entitled “A scene from a Country Show” the Bramham Branch’s display came third.

Thirdly, our next meeting is on Wednesday 15th June in the Village Hall at the usual time of 7.30 pm when the Speaker will be Mr David Wheldrake who will speak on the “ Lost Village of Lotherton”.

Visitors, as always, will be most welcome.

NEWS FROM THE BROWNIES

The Brownies have been working very hard this term and its not over yet.

We have just completed our ‘Friends to Animal’ badges and next term we are going to do our ‘Athletic’ badge.

On the 24 May we are going to enrol our new Brownies and 3 girls will be doing their ‘Hostess’ badge, which they will really enjoy.

This week, 18th May its camp fire at Kirbys Farm Thorpe Arch and we do hope the rain stays away.

Brownie Revels is on the 28th June and this year’s theme is ‘Ladybirds’. This is to take place at Clifford village hall.

3rd July is the Brownie Walk which is another event the brownies really enjoy, especially the paddling at the end.

To end the term - Sports day this year is on the 19th July and we are really going to try our best as we always do, but its not the winning, its the taking part we always say .

Catherine was at the village hall all day Saturday 14th May for the Parish Plan Exhibition and took our display. If you went you would have seen what a great job the girls did.

I would just like to say a big thank you to Catherine and Liz whose help is greatly appreciated at Brownies.

Bye for now. Brown Owl

PARISH PLAN

The Bramham Parish Plan Exhibition took place in the Village Hall on Saturday 14th May. On behalf of the Steering Committee, a big thank you to all those who visited the Exhibition and helped make the day such a success.

Over 160 people came to see the progress that has been made with the Plan and as a result we received a further 45 comments/suggestions. Some inevitably covered areas that are already known to us but some were new. In addition, six new volunteers came forward offering to help with environmental work and 15 people expressed an interest in getting involved in ‘Bramham in Bloom’ if and when that initiative gets off the ground.

All the feedback that was received is now being reviewed by the individual Working Groups and, where appropriate, Action Plans will be amended to take into account those comments and suggestions, views and opinions.

We appreciated the support from Colin Burgon MP who spent quite a long time with us talking with genuine interest to the people manning each stand and getting their views on the progress the village hopes to make. We were also grateful for the continuing support of Leeds City Council in the person of Kate Hutchinson of the Leeds North East Area Management Team who gave up her Saturday afternoon to learn more about the problems that concern our parishioners, with a view to helping out where possible.

Many thanks also to the volunteers from the Youth Club for keeping everyone suitably refreshed throughout the day and congratulations to the raffle winners, Harry Tindall and Mary Batt.
