BRAMHAM IN TIMES PAST
Lots of people have expressed an interest
purchasing a copy of the book 'BRAMHAM A VILLAGE IN TIMES PAST'.
Unfortunately the book is out of print, however if
sufficient numbers of enquiries are received, a re-print would be
considered. If you are interested please contact Neil Ferres - 845274
or email editor@bramham.org.uk.
Organisations or individuals who wish to sponsor
the book would be most welcome. Profits on sales would benefit Church
funds.

BRAMHAM PARISH COUNCIL
The meeting on 4 May was the Council’s Annual
Meeting, at which the various representatives were appointed for the
next 12 months.
David Evans was re-elected to serve as Chairman,
with John Dickson taking the vacant position of Vice-Chairman. The
Council proceeded to fill its vacancy by co-opting Philippa Hudson.
Pippa, who is originally from Wetherby and has lived in the village
for 18 months, will serve until the next Council elections in 2007.
Regular users will have observed that the Council
has been making some changes to the children’s playground. These come
about as a result of recommendations by RoSPA in its annual report. A
second entrance has been made from the footpath between Freely Lane
and Folly Lane. It is hoped that this will eliminate the vandalism
caused by people kicking out fence panels, presumably because they
couldn’t be bothered to walk round. The path between the field side
entrance and Folly Lane has been paved to prevent it becoming a
mud-path in the wet weather. Precautionary maintenance has also been
carried out on some of the swings, the self-closing gate has been
repaired and the talk tubes repainted. Some of the cost of these
changes has been borne by a grant from Leeds City Council’s North East
(Outer) Management Committee.
The Council discussed the new licensing
legislation, which allows public houses to extend their permitted
hours. The Council is opposed to “City Centre” style opening hours
which it feels are inappropriate for a residential village, and is
concerned about the nuisance that might be caused by excessive noise.
However, it is not averse to short extensions to the permitted hours,
preferably without recorded music. Whilst the Council does not condone
the practice, it is thought that some pubs in the rural area around
Wetherby have tended to stay open a little later than the official
closing time, and a change to the licensed hours is actually
regularising the situation. The Council would expect the pubs in
Bramham to have similar opening opportunities to pubs in other
villages in the area. Of course, in this respect, the role of the
Council is a consultee and the final decisions are made by Leeds City
Council’s Licensing Panel. Any residents are also free to make their
own views known to the panel.
The Council has also made representations to the
Leeds Plans Panel (East) regarding the proposed development at Bramham
Lodge on Aberford Road. The Council is not opposed to the
refurbishment and conversion to flats of the Lodge itself, which is a
listed building, nor does it object to the conversion of some of the
existing outbuildings to residential dwellings. It does however feel
that the proposed ultra-modern design of two new houses, and the
construction of a further 7 houses in the grounds, some three storeys
high, are out of keeping with the site. There are also concerns as to
whether the houses can be built to guidelines for the affect of noise
given their close proximity to the A1.

BRAMHAM GUIDES
On Monday 9th May, we celebrated seven Guides
receiving their Baden Powell Challenge Award. This award represents
almost two year’s work for the Guides and also their move up to
Rangers. A large number of parents and guests came to the presentation
and we would all like to thank them for their help and support.
We also had seven Guides make their promise and one
Guide received her first challenge badge.
The older Guides and Rangers spent a weekend
camping at Robin Hole near Ilkley recently. Although it was very cold
they had a great time. They had a murder mystery dinner party on the
Saturday night which was great fun.
We are not planning a summer camp this year but
hope to have a weekend away in November.
We are looking forward to lots of Brownies coming
up to Guides in September.
Robyn Henderson has been chosen by North East
England to take a group of Guides from all over Yorkshire to Denmark
in July. This will be her first trip in charge of a group and we wish
her every success and look forward to hearing about it when she gets
back.
The Rangers are just starting plans for a service
trip abroad in 2006; they are all looking into fund-raising ideas.
If you are interested in joining Guides or Rangers
give me a call or come to the Methodist Hall on a Monday evening.

BRAMHAM FOOTBALL CLUB
Played 39, Won 35, Drawn 3, Lost 1
The Barkston Ash Challenge Cup,
Harrogate and District League Challenge Cup,
The Alverton Trophy and the Harrogate and District
League Division Two Champions and runners up in The Spa Cup with the
reserves.
Bramham is Back
This time last year the talk was of re-forming
Bramham Football Club. We hoped that we would have a good season.
Success would be both teams completing their league campaigns and dare
we dream of a bit of silver as the icing on the cake? Well as they say
“What a difference a year makes”. Now the talk is “Roll on next
season, new challenges and hopefully more silver ware. We have set our
standards and it is our aim to maintain them.
With the Barkston Ash, Alverton Trophy and 2nd
Division Crown already secured, the Harrogate and District League
Challenge the Cup Final against Premier Division Champions, Sherwood,
was sure to be another massive test.
Once again Captain Lee Appleyard led his team by
example; not only with a commanding performance at the back but also
coolly slotting home a first-half penalty, that, added to Mark Hick’s
opener, gave us a nice 2-0 half time lead. A great 2nd half team
effort saw Sherwoods chances restricted. On the odd occasion that the
defence was breached, the ever green Gary Shooter was a colossus in
goal. Sherwood did manage to pull a goal back but this only inspired
us to an even greater work rate and when Dave Snape’s sweetly struck
volley left Sherwood’s keeper rooted to the spot and came to rest in
the back of the net, it was game set and match to Bramham.
What a superb final to an
unbelievable season.
The support at Ripon was again massive and on
behalf of all of us, I would like to take this opportunity to thank
each and everyone of you for your continued support not only at the
finals but also throughout the season.
Football is a team game. The team is not just the
11 players kicking the ball, but all - from the Committee, Managers,
Players, Kit washers and Supporters. So once again, many thanks to
all.
Planning and preparation is already underway for
next season. We will keep you informed through the Parish Magazine.
The football Club will be holding its Presentation
Night at Leeds United Elland Road on Saturday 9th July.
Tickets cost £20.00 per person. This includes buffet, disco and
transport to and from Bramham. Further details from Mick 541341.
All applications have been sent to the respective
junior leagues so fingers crossed we will be accepted and this time
next year I will be writing about how the Football Club is producing
players of the future.
We feel that we are moving in the right direction
and hope that we can keep promoting Bramham on and off the field.

BRAMHAM IN BLOOM
Thank you to everyone who visited our stand at the
Parish Plan Exhibition last Saturday. We were overwhelmed by the
interest and support we received for our plans to try and beautify the
village.
We were also delighted to have 15 more people sign
up to help.
Now that the Exhibition is over, we are just
awaiting permission from Leeds City Council to dig beds into various
verges, and we shall make a start.
Hopefully Bramham will be blooming this summer!!
We still need more sponsors for plants If you can
help please contact us.
We think that some people are under the impression
that Bramham in Bloom is competitive. This is not so. Bramham
in Bloom is just the name we have given to the scheme for beautifying
the village with flowers and shrubs.
If and when we decide to go competitive, our village, will enter
Yorkshire in Bloom which is part of Britain in Bloom
As Charlie Dimmock might say “What a difference a
year makes!”

NEWS FROM BRAMHAM SCHOOL
What a very unusual week in school from April 25th
to April 29th. Class 4 were out all week on a residential
at Ingleborough Hall in the Yorkshire Dales and on the Friday Class 1
and 2 were out at Skipton Castle. We had staff and pupils away with a
sickness bug and with only one class in school and two members of
staff it felt very odd.
I always encourage prospective parents who want to
view the school to come at a busy time because a school needs to have
pupils in it to give it a “buzz”. I am sure some of them consider me
odd for making a big fuss about a busy school but a school is not a
school without pupils.
What are we doing in school for the next few weeks?
- Leeds Tykes are coming to show us the Power Gen
Cup they won recently.
- Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 have Government tests
to tackle.
- Year 5 pupils will have a morning of Cycle
training ready for a full day in September.
- A Karate demonstration in assembly is
planned as a large number of our pupils are becoming experts at this
martial art.
- Class and Group photographs will take a morning
to complete and then these photos will be proudly displayed in many
homes especially by close relatives
- A two day Music Project has been arranged for
Class 3 and 4 which will enhance the work
already done in school over the year.
- Home visits to new starters will be undertaken by
staff ready for September ’05.
- An Open Evening will take place on Thursday
May 26th from 6.30 to 8.00 pm. All are welcome to come
and look around school.
Bramham School would like to thank Mr Batty at the
Village Store for his generous donation of football kit. We have
needed another smart kit to put our teams into and this new kit will
show that we can be as smart as any other school we play against.

ALAN BOOTH
We were all saddened to learn of the death of Alan
Booth on Thursday 12th May, and we send our deepest
sympathy to his family. Alan has been a great friend to Bramham Church
for many years and he was principally responsible for sorting out the
Churchyard several years ago and for planting so many beautiful trees
and shrubs which are now looking so lovely in the Churchyard.
Most of us remember Alan as the Postmaster in the
days when the Post Office was at the junction of Low Way and Town
Hill. He was a skilled gardener and his lovely garden on Town Hill was
always so interesting to visit on the Village Garden Days.
May he rest in peace
BRAMHAM VILLAGE HALL
For those of you from the village who didn’t manage
to find time to visit the village hall on Saturday, you missed an
excellent exhibition on the future of the village and the parish plan
that will get us there.
One of the stands at the exhibition was based on
the village “community”. The aims of this working group include a
desire to increase the use of the village hall and to see improved
facilities.
There was representation from some of the village
hall users including:
· The Youth Club that meets most Friday
evenings,
· The Tamara Two Steppers, who do
American round dancing on Wednesdays
· The children’s dancing classes and
adult pilates on various evenings
· The senior citizens group that is
hoping to hold regular events
· The Fitness League that is hoping to
start classes in September.
Details of the fund raising target and progress
towards it were also on display. To date a total of £21,000 has been
raised in the last few years to buy new tables, chairs, and to replace
the roof, but the hall still needs £79,000 to carry out its planned
refurbishment – electrics, toilets, kitchen, changing and
storage areas.
If anyone has time or skills to offer to assist in
the repairs and maintenance of the hall, or who could help the
committee in fund raising efforts or grant applications, please
contact one of the committee members whose names are
printed at the front of the parish magazine. All of the current
committee members work either full or part time, and would really
appreciate some assistance, perhaps from a retired member of the
village who would enjoy being part of the future plans for the village
hall.
Alternatively you could simply support the hall by
attending the fund raising activities, joining the monthly draw or
holding your party or event there.
USE IT OR LOSE IT ……..was the message.
Monthly draw results are:
4 (£10), 7, 76, 90, 102, 117, 125, 128, 137, 145,
178 (all £5).
Finally many draw payments are now overdue. £10
needs to be paid immediately.
If you opted to pay for the monthly draw by annual
standing order of £10 please make sure your bank has the details. New
forms are available from Tess Ferres.

GOODBYE FROM Rev'd LINDA MUNT
I shall be leaving the Lower Wharfe Group of Parishes at the
beginning of July to become Vicar of Market Weighton, Goodmanham and
Sancton. I have so enjoyed being with you all for the last fifteen
months and I am very sad to leave. I will always remember the people I
have met here and I hope that links will not be completely severed. I
do hope that some of you will come to see me in Market Weighton. God
Bless you all.
