CRIME PREVENTION

The new Springtime Campaign is to target people who own sheds and garages and they leave them either insecure or open, displaying all those valuables inside.

The following general advice may help to prevent future problems.

Make sure your shed or garage is sturdy. If not, make this a priority and improve the fabric of the building.

Fit a quality lock on the door. Choose a closed-shackle padlock and bolt the fittings onto the door and fit a steel plate on the inside to reinforce the door.

Make sure any windows are secured. Consider fitting a grille or bars to prevent access. Fit a blind or net curtains to stop would be thieves from looking inside.

Postcode all property such as cycles, lawnmowers, hedge trimmers and garden furniture by engraving, stamping or even painting. Visually marked property does have a deterrent effect upon the thief.

Light up your shed or garage. Fit an   energy-efficient dusk to dawn light.

Thieves don’t like being seen, and this  will make them feel uncomfortable.

Shed and garage alarms are a simple and effective device that may help to prevent crime. They are battery-operated and cost from around £5.

The Crime Prevention Panel has a selection of alarms and UV Marker Pens for sale. Panel Members are also available for short talks and demonstrations from one to one or as a group event. Simply telephone the Chairman, Mrs. Maureen Brewer on 01937 582 441 for further details.

Remember you can always telephone the following numbers should you see or hear anything suspicious or wish a Crime Reduction Officer to visit you at home or your business.

Bramham Rambling Group

Our monthly ramble took place on Sunday 10th April through the lovely countryside of Bardsey and Hetchell Woods. Again we were very lucky as the sun shone throughout the walk. Our Group is growing steadily and I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did.

Our next walk will take place on Sunday 15th May 2005. Jacky Clark has kindly offered to arrange our next outing and details will be left with John at the Post Office for your assistance.

Look forward to seeing you then.

NEWS FROM THE METHODISTS

Minister Rev’d Gary Ridley Tel: 01937 842156

Programme of Services

Sunday 1st May Morning worship led by Rev’d Gary Ridley 10.00 am (5 Year Plan 3)

Sunday 8th May Morning worship led by Mrs Linda Smith at 10.00 am

Sunday 15th May United Pentecost Service at Boston Spa at 10.30 am

Sunday 22nd May Morning worship led by Mr David Mountain at All Saints’ at 10.00 am

Sunday 29th May Fellowship Service at 10.00 am

Dear friends

On the 15th May, the day we celebrate Pentecost, the folk at our Boston Spa chapel will have the pleasure of hosting the Circuit morning act of worship, involving all twelve chapels.

A morning service of this kind is a new experience for many of us, but it will be a wonderful opportunity for people to gather from different places for what we believe will be a challenging and uplifting occasion. We also have the pleasure of welcoming the Chairman of the District, the Reverend Stephen Burgess to preach on this highpoint in the Christian calendar.

Children and teenagers will be having their own worship-based activity at the same time (10.30 am) in Boston Spa Village Hall.

That first Pentecost was also an occasion when people gathered from different places just as we will do. On further observation, it is also apparent that what we often concentrate upon in the coming of the Holy Spirit is how He prompted the believers to both work and witness to the things of God. They had been given strength to serve, continuing the work that Christ began.

They fed the poor; they provided for the widow and the fatherless; they organised food parcels, they served tables shared their belonging; they passed on the teaching of Christ and received power to become evangelists, and missionaries, and pioneers of the kingdom of God.

However, there is another area, which we sometimes forget and this takes me back to my introduction. The Holy Spirit also prompted them to worship. This is put last, but as a spiritual priority it should be put first. Their work, and their witness, arose out of their worship. The Wind of God blew, and the Fire of God fell upon those who had gathered for worship. It happened when they were gathered for prayer, waiting upon God for the fulfilment of the promised power. It happened when, “They were all with one accord in one place.” Worshipping time may be waiting time, but it is never wasted time. Worship warms the heart, inspires the tongue and gives power for work and witness. Let us offer our hears in worship to God, who knows what mighty things He may do.

Rev’d Gary Ridley

BRAMHAM PARISH COUNCIL

Extract of the address by David Evans, Chairman of the Council at the Annual Parish Meeting on 6 April:

The make up of the council remained unchanged since the 2003 election until the last meeting in March 2005, at which time we received the resignation of Cllr Paul Topping. I would like to place on record the Council’s appreciation of the work of Cllr Topping over many years. In accordance with the legal procedures governing the work of Parish Councils, the council hopes to co-opt a new councillor at the Parish Council meeting on 4 May.

The Parish Council has been able to limit the increase in the Parish Precept element of the Council Tax to 4%, one of the lowest increases in the Leeds Metropolitan area. This contrasts with substantial increases in neighbouring parishes such as 33% in East Keswick and 38% in Bardsey. A Band D property in Bramham commands a precept of £17.71 compared with £22.88 in Clifford and £43.57 in Wetherby.

At the last Annual Parish Meeting it was reported that it was hoped to shortly form a steering group to take the Parish Plan forward, since that time the steering group has formed and the planning process has gathered a momentum which is a credit to the village and all participants in the various working groups. At my last count the Parish Plan movement involves some 32 parishioners and I’m sure the whole village is looking forward eagerly to the exhibition in the Village Hall on 14th May.

At the same meeting, Inspector Mark Jessop from West Yorkshire Police said that he was firmly committed to community policing in villages such as Bramham. He said that there had been an increase in manpower to support high visibility policing in such communities, Bramham being represented by PC Kate Done. Many of the people committing crimes in the village are coming from urban areas of Leeds, and the force was concentrating on targeting criminals in these areas which should have a beneficial effect in Bramham. The overall crime figures have dropped 35% year on year, and more detailed information is available for internet users on a new police website www.beatcrime.info.

However, he was concerned that in order the falling trend in crime to continue, assistance was required from local residents, who are urged to remain vigilant. There had been 3 burglaries in March, all during the afternoon in the Lyndon Avenue/Bradford Close Area. On his way to the meeting he had observed several garages left open containing ladders and valuable equipment. He had approached some of these, and had not been challenged. Finally, he said that there will be additional activities to curb speeding motorists in this area in the next few months. We have been warned!

Application forms for residents’ tickets for the Leeds Festival are now available from Bramham Post Office. The closing date for applications is 15 May, and it is hoped to let applicants know the outcome shortly after 2 June.
